Consider this. Nearly every large animal on this planet is stronger than us. Almost every predator has claws, or venom, or sharp teeth. But humans have two advantages that have enabled us to survive and thrive – a large brain, and hands that can pick up and manipulate objects. At the very dawn of pre-history we were busy making stone tools, turning animal skins into clothing, and decorating our own bodies with things that we’d made. We just can’t help it. We have to make things. Give any human a physical object and they will try to do something with it.

  1. A ventriloquist doing a nightclub gig with his dummy on his knee tells a dumb robot joke; a beverage service robot stops and shouts at the ventriloquist.

    “What gives you the right to stereotype artificial intelligence that way? You should be ashamed of yourself.”

    Flustered, the ventriloquist begins to stammer by way of an apology to the robot.

    “You keep out of this, buster!” yells the robot, “I’m talking to the little idiot on your knee.”

    1. Hmmm. Is the punchline that a robot is just an elaborate ventriloquist dummy? Or that it’s not smart enough to tell the difference? Or is it maybe that there is no difference, that we’re all dummies, just of increasing sophistication?

      Or do I need to just shut up and stop over thinking it? 🙂
