In a sense most of us don’t really know this to be true. We were taught about numbers at school. We were taught rules (or cheats) for how numbers work. But real mathematicians, not being satisfied with this lax attitude, have produced number theory and although I don’t fully understand it I know that some very clever people do, and I have confidence in that.
