A new paper using data from NASA’s Kepler telescope came out recently, estimating that 22% of Sun-like stars harbor Earth-sized planets. This is a big increase over previous estimates. It’s very cool work. Love it. But the news spin was predictable:

That article pretty well nails it for me. In terms we have previously discussed here, it’s the great filter at work. He seems to be arguing that the evolution of intelligent life was dependent on many rare circumstances and therefore the great filter lies in our past. It’s both rational and optimistic!

Agreed. It’s looking like we may be the first civilization in our galaxy. The only negative point is that, if the nearest civilization is millions or billions of light years away, there’s a good chance we’ll never encounter them.
