8 Incredible Facts You May Not Know About Human Evolution

An interesting article at io9: 8 Incredible Facts You May Not Know About Human Evolution.

For most of the time that modern humans have existed on the planet, we’ve been hunter gatherers.  It’s not until about 10,000 or so years ago that people started settling down and farming, with civilization cranking up around 5000 years ago.  For almost two hundred thousand years before then, anatomically modern humans essentially lived in a state of nature, albeit with progressively more sophisticated tools over time.

  1. Very interesting – I’ll have to go back and go through the links, which reminds me that I’m really enjoying the *Related articles* links you’re providing as well as the embedded ones – thanks!

  2. Thanks for the feedback! I’m still very much figuring out this blogging thing and experimenting with what works. Though I can’t take too much credit for the related articles. WordPress throws them up as suggestions and all I really have to do is select the ones I think fit. (I err on being inclusive, so I’m glad to hear they’re useful.)

BTW, let me know if there’s anything you’d like to discuss. I may not be able to say much about it, but I could start the thread for you and others.

  3. As you know the cognitive science of religion is a primary interest of mine, and according to Wiki:

“The field employs methods and theories from a very broad range of disciplines, including: cognitive psychology, evolutionary psychology, cognitive anthropology, artificial intelligence, cognitive neuroscience, neurobiology, zoology, and ethology.”

… as well as anything and everything to do with the unconscious. I’ll try to give some thought to something more specific. Thanks!

    1. Thanks amanimal. I’m thinking about posts on consciousness, the Turing test, and the mind/brain relationship; similar to conversations we’ve had on HP. I may also do a write up of Norenzayan’s book.

      1. That sounds good(I may be biased :)) especially the ‘Big Gods’ write-up.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the ‘being human’ site you might find an idea or 2 for a post there. It seems to be mostly overviews, not getting into anything too deep, though the ‘Luminaries’ page though is a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of people doing interesting research and whatnot – you might see something that’d make for a good jumping off point.

Oh, I enjoyed the post on morality too – I’m just rereading bits of ‘Thinking, F&S’ before I start Haidt’s book.

      2. Maybe a post, or series even, on the Self(after all, *Self*AwarePatterns?) and Self concepts – I’m looking at the ‘Themes’ at ‘being human’ one of which is ‘Self’. Damn, now I’m itching to order Damasio’s and Hood’s books. Anyway, just a thought.
